Traveling to Russia on a Budget

July 18, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Want to go sight seeing in one of the most culturally rich countries in Europe but you don’t want to lose all of your savings in the meantime? Use some of the following steps to have an amazing, cheap vacation.

1. Plan Early and Well

If you are planning on vacationing, you should start planning at least a year in advanced. If you travel on the spur of the moment, don’t expect to be able to get the best deals. The first step should be acquiring the necessary paperwork. US Passports can be obtained at the postal office by just filling out a simple form. It will also be vital to get Russian visas, but those can be bought for around 30 dollars.

Spend much of this time before the vacation doing research. You’ll find the most inexpensive plane tickets, hotel accommodations, or whatever else you’re looking for earlier in the year. Also, plan exactly what you want to see so that you can ensure that you will definitely have time for it.

2. Traveling on the cheap
Instead of taking a direct route from your hometown to Russia, you could research methods that will take longer, but save you hundreds of dollars on the plane ticket. When it comes time to get around Russia, instead of using cabs, you can invest in a metro rail ticket that will take you all over the country for hundreds of dollars less.

3. Hostels instead of hotels

You’ll have to give up some luxuries, like a bathroom to yourself and the assurance that everything will be clean, but it may ultimately be worth it. For thousands of dollars less on the entire trip, you’ll sleep in a room with your fellow adventurers. Maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two. However, you may end up having to perform a daily chore on top of the daily rate in order to earn your keep.

4. Free attractions
Walking tours will go to every attraction you’ll want to see, but they are expensive. For the price of a travel guide book and a good pair of shoes you can see all of the cathedrals, parks, museums, and amazing museums that you want.

5. Don’t travel in the peak season
Part of your research should be what the peak traveling seasons for Russia are. If you go in the low season instead flights, hotels, and much more will be a lot cheaper than any other time in the year. The amount of money you’ll save just by going in a colder month will be tremendous.

6. Eat Wisely
Many of the restaurants you encounter while in Russia may be directed toward tourists and will therefore be a lot more expensive. There will likely be a delicious meal right around the corner at a smaller local restaurant for a lot less.
