Cuban hotel becomes first to operate under U.S. brand

A large “Four Points by Sheraton” sign has gone up outside the Havana hotel that this week becomes the first in Cuba to operate under a U.S. brand since the 1959 revolution. The military-owned Gaviota 5th Avenue Hotel, close to the Caribbean seafront, is one of two hotels that Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide agreed to manage in a multimillion-dollar deal with Cuba in March.

Starwood Four Points Expands to Greater Seattle

If you find yourself at certain Starwood hotels in the next few months, you’ll be able to enter your room with the tap of an iPhone or Apple Watch, touch the mirror for weather updates and even request a robot butler to bring you a toothbrush. At its Stamford, Connecticut-based headquarters, Starwood is hard at work testing concept rooms filled with smart technology that’s already reached three of its chains: Four Points by Sheraton, boutique concept Aloft and its sustainable Elements brand.

Priceline Group, Expedia and TripAdvisor posted hotel demand gains and share growth in Q1, according to an analyst’s report on Monday. “Hotel industry demand remained strong on Q1 and the ‘Big 3’ in online travel – Priceline, Expedia and TripAdvisor – continued to take market share,” wrote Cowen & Co.

Apple Maps Now Includes Hotel Reviews From TripAdvisor and Booking.com

Since the release of Apple’s in-house Maps app as part of iOS 6 back in 2012, Yelp has been the company’s sole partner for integrating customer reviews of businesses and other points of interest. In recent days, however, Apple’s Maps app has begun including reviews from TripAdvisor and Booking.com on select hotel listings.
