Safety Tips for Travelling Abroad

Depending on where you go, some countries offer more safety than others but you should never travel complacently. Always have safety in mind before you do anything out of the ordinary, and make sure you have a backup plan for money in case you’re mugged.  Because it’s always better to be safe than sorry, we offer these tips to help you travel safely while you leave your home country.

Where to Stay

Look for well-known chain hotels, as they are far safer than the Air BnB equivalent. The flipside is that these hotels might be more expensive. If possible, you can book a private room if you can manage to meet with the host. It’s also a good idea to look up crime data on the neighborhood/city you’re planning to stay at.

How to Dress

Women should dress conservatively when visiting another country, even one with less than conservative values. You simply never know, and it’s best to avoid unwanted attention in a foreign land. Men and women should avoid wearing flash clothes or jewelry for the same reason.

How to Act

Learn some of the basic customs for the place you plan to travel to. For example, learn how to order at a restaurant and proper etiquette to eat.  There may be other customs too, like bowing at the end of a conversation. Knowing these small details will help make natives a bit warmer towards you, as it shows you care about their culture and you’re willing to make an effort to show it.
